Economy Focus: The annual rate of inflation based on All-India Wholesale Price Index (WPI) number is 15.18%

The annual rate of inflation based on the All India Wholesale Price Index (WPI) is 15.18% (provisional) for the month of June 2022 (for June 2021). This is marginally lower than the WPI figure of 15.88% in May 2022. The high inflation rate in June 2022 is mainly due to the rise in prices of mineral oils, food products, oil and natural gas, base metals, chemicals and chemical products, food products etc. in compared to the corresponding month of the previous year.

Monthly changes in WPI main groups:

•Primary articles (weight 22.62%):- The index of this main group increased by (1.45%) in June 2022 to 182.4 (provisional) from 179.8 (provisional) for the month of May 2022. Crude prices oil and gas (6.59%) and food (2.40%) increased in June 2022 compared to May 2022. Non-food (-2.06%) and minerals (-9.04%) prices in June 2022 decreased compared to May, 2022.

•Fuel and Power (weight 13.15%):- The index for this main group increased by (0.65%) to 155.4 (provisional) in June 2022 from 154.4 (provisional) for the month of May 2022. Mineral prices of oils (0.98%) increased in June 2022 compared to May 2022.

•Manufactured products (weight 64.23%):- The index of this main group in June 2022 fell by (-0.76%) to 143.7 (provisional) from 144.8 (provisional) for the month of May 2022. Out of 22 NIC two -digit groups for Manufactured Products, 14 groups experienced price increases and 8 groups experienced price decreases. Chemicals and chemical products, other non-metallic mineral products, electrical equipment, motor vehicles, textiles, etc. contribute to the increase in prices in June 2022 compared to May 2022. Some groups that saw a decrease in prices are base metals, food products, other manufacturing and furniture in June 2022 compared to May 2022.

•WPI Food Index (weight 24.38%): The food index consisting of “Food Products” from the Primary Articles Group and “Food Products” from the Manufactured Products Group increased from 176.1 in May 2022 to 178.4 in June 2022. Inflation rate based on WPI Food Index increased from 10.89% in May 2022 to 12.41% in June 2022

•Final index for the month of April 2022 (base year: 2011-12=100): For the month of April 2022, the final index of wholesale prices and the rate of inflation for “all commodities” (base: 2011-12=100 ) were 152.3 and 15 .38%. Details of All India Wholesale Price Indices and inflation rates for various commodity groups for June 2022 are in Annexure I. Annual WPI based inflation rate (Y-o-Y) for various commodity groups for last six months is in Annexure II. The WPI index for various commodity groups for the last six months is in Appendix III.

•Response rate: The WPIs for June 2022 were compiled with a weighted response rate of 82.5 percent, while the final figure for April 2022 is based on a weighted response rate of 91.4 percent. Preliminary WPI numbers will be revised in accordance with the WPI Final Revisions Policy.

Next date of press release: WPI for the month of July 2022 will be published on 16.8.2022.

Note: All-India WPI is published monthly on the 14th of each month (or the following working day) with a time lag of two weeks of the reference month and the index numbers are compiled from data obtained from institutional sources and selected manufacturing industries units across the country. This press release contains WPI (base year 2011-12=100) for the month of June 2022 (Provisional), April 2022 (Final) and other months/years. Preliminary WPI data is completed after 10 weeks and then frozen.
