An explosion occurred late Tuesday at a US-led coalition military base within Baghdad International Airport, raising tensions just before Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian‘s scheduled visit to Iraq. Iraqi security forces reported hearing the blast in an area occupied by international coalition advisors but have yet to determine the cause or identify the perpetrators.
A senior military official revealed that two Katyusha-type rockets were involved, with one striking an Iraqi anti-terrorist forces compound and the other hitting inside the coalition base. No group has claimed responsibility for the attack, and air traffic at the airport remained unaffected.
The incident comes as Iran and Iraq, both Shiite-majority nations, have continued to deepen political and trade ties. Iranian-backed Ketaeb Hezbollah in Iraq condemned the explosion, suggesting it was an attempt to disrupt the Iranian president’s visit.
The attack adds to a series of drone and rocket strikes targeting US-led coalition forces in Iraq and Syria over the past year, particularly amid the escalating Israel-Hamas conflict. Currently, around 2,500 US troops are deployed in Iraq as part of the international coalition against the Islamic State group.
