TMC Leaders Released After Detention in Delhi Protest

New Delhi, October 3, 2023: TMC general secretary Abhishek Banerjee and other party leaders were released by the police on Tuesday night after being detained during a sit-in at the Union Rural Development Ministry office in New Delhi.

The TMC leaders, along with state ministers, lawmakers, and supporters, held protests in the national capital for the second consecutive day over the release of funds to West Bengal by the Centre. They initially gathered at Jantar Mantar and later marched to the Rural Development Ministry at Krishi Bhawan.

However, TMC leaders claimed that Minister of State Sadhvi Niranjan Jyoti refused to meet them, leading to a sit-in at the ministry premises. Around 9 pm, the police detained the TMC leaders and evicted them from the ministry premises.

Abhishek Banerjee expressed outrage over the incident, calling it a “black day for Indian democracy.” He accused the Delhi Police of manhandling elected representatives and mentioned that even women MPs were subjected to rough treatment.

Banerjee challenged the BJP and stated that the people of the country would respond to the events of the day. He announced a ‘Raj Bhavan Chalo’ march in Kolkata on October 5, where they plan to submit letters to the governor, demanding answers for each one.

The protests and the Centre-West Bengal tug-of-war have escalated, highlighting the growing political tensions in the region.
