On Friday, the Israeli military reported that it intercepted a suspicious “aerial target” approaching from Syria, which a war monitor identified as a drone launched by an Iran-backed group.
In an official statement, the Israeli Air Force confirmed, “A short while ago, a suspicious aerial target that approached Israeli territory from Syria was intercepted… before it crossed into Israeli territory.”
According to the Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, the drone was launched by the Iran-backed Islamic Resistance in Iraq group, a network of militias allied with Iran. The war monitor added, “Israeli air defences in the occupied Syrian Golan targeted two drones launched by the Islamic Resistance in Iraq, coming from Iraq through Syrian territory.”
The Islamic Resistance in Iraq has frequently claimed responsibility for launching drone attacks aimed at Israel.
Israel’s Ongoing Regional Conflicts
Israel currently faces multiple regional threats as it continues fighting on two fronts against Hezbollah in southern Lebanon and Hamas in Gaza. At the same time, it faces attacks from Iran-backed militants in Syria, Iraq, and Yemen.
While Israeli authorities typically refrain from commenting on individual strikes involving Syria, they have consistently reiterated that they will not permit Iran to strengthen its influence and military presence in the region.
