In a significant milestone for India’s defense capabilities, the Supersonic Missile-Assisted Release of Torpedo (SMART) system was successfully flight-tested on May 1, 2024, at around 0830 hrs from Dr APJ Abdul Kalam Island off the coast of Odisha. Developed by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), SMART represents a next-generation missile-based lightweight torpedo delivery system designed to bolster the Indian Navy’s anti-submarine warfare capabilities.
The SMART system, housed in a canister-based missile platform, features a range of advanced sub-systems, including a two-stage solid propulsion system, electromechanical actuator system, and precision inertial navigation system. Moreover, the system incorporates an innovative parachute-based release mechanism for the advanced lightweight torpedo payload.
During the test, the missile was launched from a ground mobile launcher, validating several state-of-the-art mechanisms such as symmetric separation, ejection, and velocity control. These critical validations mark a significant step forward in enhancing India’s naval defense capabilities, extending the operational range and effectiveness of anti-submarine warfare missions.
Raksha Mantri Shri Rajnath Singh praised the successful flight-test of SMART, commending the efforts of DRDO and industry partners. “The development of the system will further enhance the strength of our Navy,” he remarked, emphasizing the strategic importance of such technological advancements in safeguarding national security interests.
Dr. Samir V Kamat, Secretary of the Department of Defence R&D and Chairman of DRDO, applauded the collaborative efforts of the SMART team, urging them to maintain their commitment to excellence. The successful test of the SMART system underscores India’s dedication to advancing indigenous defense technologies and reinforces its position as a formidable maritime power in the region.
The flight-test of the SMART system represents a significant achievement for India’s defense research and development efforts, signaling a leap forward in enhancing the country’s maritime security posture and bolstering its capabilities to counter emerging threats in the maritime domain.
