The Department of Fisheries, the Department of Fisheries, Livestock and Dairy, the Government of India and the Government of Singapore organized a virtual East Asia Summit (EAS) Workshop on Illegal, Unreported, and Unregulated (IUU) Fisheries yesterday led jointly by India and Singapore. Food Agency (SFA). Shri JatindraNath Swain, secretary, Department of Fisheries (DoF), Government of India has provided an important address. The workshop was attended by 8 EAS member states, with 4 information partners, officials from the Department of Fisheries, Government of India, Fisheries officials from various countries / UTs and others invited.
The Food Agency highlighted the importance of combating IUU fishing
In his opening remarks, Shri Swain highlighted the urgent need to combat illegal, unreported and unregulated fishing. Mr. Swain shared some of India’s efforts with programs to combat IUU fishing, especially in partnership with coastal fishing communities.
The Workshop started with an opening session led by India and led by the Joint Secretary, Department of Fisheries, Government of India, Dr.JBalaji. During the welcoming speech Dr. J Balaji presented the theme of the workshop and welcomed all distinguished delegates, participants and participants of the Workshop from Australia, Cambodia, China, Indonesia, New Zealand, Republic of Korea and India and Singapore. In his opening remarks at the EAS IUU Workshop, the CEO of Singapore Food Agency highlighted the importance of fighting the IUU fishery which has had a negative impact on the health and food security of coastal fishing communities.
Technical Session 1 focused on regional co-operation in the fight against IUU fishing and was led by the Singapore Food Agency. Information partners, namely the Bay of Bengal Program Inter-Governmental Organization (BOBPIGO), Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organization (CSIRO), Southeast Asian Fisheries Development Center (SEAFDEC) and the UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) to share regional efforts and and initial and ongoing efforts to combat IUU fishing. During the Technical Session, a representative from each participating country shared their national success stories, information obtained and the steps taken by the appropriate country to curb IUU fishing.
After the session and discussion, the webinar concluded with the closing remarks by MsGeetika Srivastava, Joint Secretary, Department of Foreign Affairs, GoI.
