In a novel initiative to promote voter awareness, a group of six scuba divers in Chennai took to the depths of the sea to enact the voting process underwater. The campaign, held in Neelankarai, aimed to emphasize the importance of exercising one’s right to vote ahead of the upcoming Lok Sabha elections.
Diving to a depth of sixty feet, the divers carried with them a mock Electronic Voting Machine (EVM) and voting awareness placards provided by the Election Commission of India (ECI). Messages such as “I know the power of my vote” and “My country, my vote” adorned the placards, serving as a reminder of the significance of democratic participation.
The initiative, organized by SB Aravind Tharunsri, a Scuba dive instructor and director of Temple Adventure, sought to engage citizens in a visually striking manner, highlighting the duty and privilege of voting. Through this underwater enactment of the voting process, the divers aimed to inspire voter turnout and civic engagement among the public.
The event garnered attention for its creativity and symbolic representation of democratic values. Participants emphasized the need for every eligible voter to exercise their franchise, contributing to the democratic process and shaping the future of the nation.
As India gears up for the general elections spanning seven phases from April 19 to June 1, initiatives like these serve as reminders of the fundamental principles of democracy. With nearly 97 crore eligible voters across the country, voter awareness campaigns play a crucial role in fostering informed and active citizenship.
