The United States rebuffed Russian claims of interfering in the ongoing Indian elections on Thursday, stating that it does not involve itself in elections anywhere in the world, including India.
State Department Spokesperson Matthew Miller addressed reporters at a daily news conference, responding to Russian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova’s statement in Moscow regarding a recent Washington Post article. Zakharova alleged that the US was meddling in India’s internal affairs, citing the article’s claims about an alleged plot involving a Research and Analysis Wing (RAW) officer and the assassination of Khalistani terrorist Gurpatwant Singh Pannun on American soil last year.
Miller categorically denied the accusations, emphasizing that election decisions in India, as in any other country, are the prerogative of the people of that nation. He declined to comment further on the alleged plot, citing its status as an ongoing legal matter.
Zakharova had characterized the US accusations against India as part of a broader pattern of unfounded allegations against various states, reflecting a colonial mentality and a misunderstanding of India’s historical context and national character. She accused the US of attempting to disrupt India’s political landscape to complicate the ongoing parliamentary elections.
In response to Zakharova’s remarks, Miller refrained from delving into the specifics of the alleged plot, citing the ongoing legal proceedings. He emphasized that the allegations in the case remain unproven until proven before a jury.
Thursday’s exchange underscores the diplomatic tensions surrounding the Indian elections and the broader geopolitical dynamics at play between the US, Russia, and India.
