In line with Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi’s vision of providing safe drinking water to all rural households, the country has reached the milestone of having 50% of rural households access to tap water. Goa, Telangana, A&N Islands, D&N Haveli and Daman & Diu, Puducherry and Haryana have achieved 100% home communication. Punjab, Gujarat, Himachal Pradesh and Bihar have more than 90% cover and are making rapid progress in achieving the status of ‘HarGhar Jal’.
In an effort to achieve the “Gram Swarajya”, Mahatma Gandhi’s dream, the Jal Jeevan Mission aims to empower the Panchayati Raj Institutions and communities by participating in water supply programs from the outset. More than 9.59 rural households spread across the States / UTs receive water on their premises. Women and girls These homes are now free of the long-standing problem of long-distance travel in hot weather, rain and snow in search of water. ‘HarGhar Jal’ is a Union Government initiative, initiated by the Jal Jeevan Mission under the Ministry of Jal Shakti, in partnership with countries / UTs to ensure tap water supply to all rural households by 2024.
When the Jal Jeevan Mission was launched in 2019, only 3.23 families in Crore meant that 17% of rural people had access to tap water. The burden of arranging water for daily household needs fell heavily on women and young girls. There is ample evidence that school attendance among girls was declining sharply in the summer when, due to increased water demand, more travel was needed. After the launch of the Jal Jeevan Mission and improved access to tap water connections within their buildings, significant progress has been made in this regard. As of 27.05.2022, 108 districts, 1,222 blocks, 71,667 Gram Panchayats and 1,51,171 villages have become “HarGhar Jal”, where all rural families have been provided with tap water.
This year as the nation celebrates the ‘Azadi of AmritMahotsav’, a special Gram Sabhas has gathered across the country to discuss and discuss issues related to drinking water to achieve the ‘WASH PrabudhGaon’. Prime Minister Shri Narendra Mdoi has spoken to and interviewed Sarpanch and members of PaniSamitis several times in the past, encouraging them to participate in the program as they are the last custodians of the water supply infrastructure built under ‘HarGhar Jal. ‘. Under the JJM, support is provided to the Panchayats by the Regional Government through Implementing Support Centers (ISAs) in community consultation, capacity building of PaniSamitis, and taking on O&M activities.
