Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma Retire from T20Is After India’s Historic T20 World Cup Win

June 29, 2024 — In an emotional culmination of their illustrious careers, Indian cricket legends Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma announced their retirement from T20 internationals after leading India to a historic victory in the ICC T20 World Cup 2024 final against Australia. The duo, key figures in India’s cricketing history, couldn’t hold back tears as they embraced each other on the field, marking the end of an era.

India ended their 11-year wait for an ICC trophy with a thrilling win in Barbados. Kohli, who had been under scrutiny for his form throughout the tournament, delivered a match-winning performance in the final. His 59-ball 76 helped India post a formidable total of 176/7 after a shaky start. Kohli’s pivotal innings earned him the Player of the Match award.

The announcement of their retirement came moments after the victory. Kohli and Sharma had decided this would be their last appearance in the shortest format, irrespective of the outcome of the match.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi praised the duo, calling them “true legends” of the game. “Their contributions to Indian cricket are unparalleled, and they leave behind a legacy that will inspire future generations,” he said in a statement.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah also lauded their achievements and emphasized the government’s support for Indian cricket. “Under the leadership of Prime Minister Modi, we are committed to the progress of sports in the country,” Shah wrote on social media.

The match saw an outpouring of emotions as Kohli and Sharma embraced, visibly moved by the occasion. “It’s hard to sum up what we have been through for the last few years,” said Rohit in the post-match presentation. “We worked very hard as individuals and as a team. This victory is the result of our efforts over the last 3-4 years.”

Rohit praised Kohli’s performance, acknowledging the pressure he was under. “Virat held one end, which was crucial for us. His experience and quality shone through when we needed it most,” he added.

Rohit also credited the team’s success to the leadership of coach Rahul Dravid. “A lot has gone on behind the scenes for us to be here today and win this game. It is not just about what we did today, but what we have been doing for the last 3-4 years. I’m very proud of the team and the management,” he said.

The 2024 T20 World Cup will be remembered not just for India’s victory, but for the emotional farewell of two of its greatest players. Kohli and Sharma’s contributions to Indian cricket have left an indelible mark, and their departure from T20Is marks the end of an era filled with memorable moments and significant achievements.
