India has achieved yet another milestone in the context of the IP innovation ecosystem, where for the first time in 11 years, the number of domestic patents exceeded the number of international patent entries in the Indian patents office in Quarter Jan-Mar 2022 i.e. a total of 19796 patent applications filed, 10706 filed by Indian applicants against 9090 non-Indians.
The Minister of Trade and Industry, Consumer Affairs, Public Distribution and Fabric, Shri PiyushGoyal commended DPIIT’s consistent efforts to strengthen the IPR regime in India by promoting innovation, and reducing the burden of compliance. The concerted effort of DPIIT and the IP office has led to increased IP awareness among all sectors of society. These efforts, on the other hand, have led to an increase in the number of IPR entries, while at the same time reducing the use of patents in IP offices. He also pointed out that this will take India closer to India’s goal of being in the top 25 countries in the Global Innovation Index.
Some of the key steps taken by the Government during the years that have strengthened India’s IP empire include payment agreements such as a 10% discount on online filling, 80% for startup licenses, Small Business and Educational Institutions, and accelerated testing providers. The foundation laid by the National IPR policy and the efforts made by the Government to be successful in India as patenting increased from 42763 in 2014-15 to 66440 in 2021-22, more than 50% in 7 times. years, Almost five times the increase in copyright allocation by 2021-22 (30,074) compared to 2014-15 (5978), Reduction of patent duration from 72 months in Dec 2016 to 5-23 months currently, on a different technology. Locally, India’s ranking in the Global Innovation Index has risen to 46 by 2021 (+35 levels) compared to 81 in 2015-16.
