Interpol, the International Criminal Police Organization, has issued a Red Corner Notice against Karanvir Singh, a suspected member of the banned terrorist group Babbar Khalsa International. Singh is believed to be currently residing in Pakistan. The notice, aimed at aiding international law enforcement agencies in locating and detaining individuals pending extradition or similar legal actions, was issued following an official request from Indian authorities.
Karanvir Singh, aged 38 and originating from Punjab’s Kapurthala district, faces a slew of charges in India, including criminal conspiracy, murder, offenses related to the Arms Act and Explosive Substances Act, raising funds for terrorist activities, conspiracy, and being a member of a terrorist gang or organization. The issuance of a Red Corner Notice signifies Interpol’s acknowledgment of these charges and its commitment to assisting in Singh’s potential arrest and extradition.
This development comes against the backdrop of an ongoing diplomatic dispute between India and Canada. Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau recently claimed that there were “credible reasons” to believe that the Indian government was linked to the killing of Sikh separatist leader Hardeep Singh Nijjar in Canada. However, India has categorically dismissed these allegations as “absurd” and “motivated,” calling for concrete evidence to support such claims.
The controversy surrounding Nijjar’s death has intensified diplomatic tensions between the two countries, with Canada conducting an extensive investigation into the matter. The Canadian government reportedly invested significant resources, including human and signal intelligence, in this months-long investigation. This intelligence allegedly includes communications involving Indian diplomats present in Canada.
Despite the Canadian government’s assertions, the Indian Ministry of External Affairs has stated that it has not received any specific information from Canada regarding the Nijjar case. Arindam Bagchi, the spokesperson for the Ministry of External Affairs, expressed India’s willingness to examine any pertinent information provided but emphasized that no such details had been shared thus far.
As a designated terrorist in India, Hardeep Singh Nijjar was tragically shot dead outside a Sikh temple in Surrey, British Columbia,on June 18. The circumstances surrounding his death remain a subject of international scrutiny and debate.
