North Korean leader Kim Jong Un has conveyed his “firm support and solidarity” for Russia in a congratulatory message to Russian President Vladimir Putin on Victory Day, commemorating the 79th anniversary of the end of World War Two, according to state news agency KCNA.
As Russia observes the victory over Nazi Germany, tensions with the West escalate amid the ongoing conflict between Russian troops and Ukraine’s Western-backed forces.
In his letter to Putin, Kim expressed unwavering support for Russia’s cause, emphasizing solidarity with the Russian army and people in their struggle against what he described as imperialist hegemonic policies.
The message comes at a time when accusations have been leveled against North Korea for allegedly supplying weapons to Russia for use in Ukraine. Both Moscow and Pyongyang have refuted these allegations, although they pledged to strengthen military cooperation last year.
Recent reports by United Nations sanctions monitors suggested that debris from a missile that landed in the Ukrainian city of Kharkiv earlier in the year belonged to a North Korean Hwasong-11 series ballistic missile.
Despite these allegations and geopolitical tensions, Kim’s expression of support underscores the enduring ties between North Korea and Russia, particularly in the face of external pressures and regional dynamics.
