New Delhi, The National Quantum Mission (NQM) in India achieved a significant milestone as Secretary, Department of Science and Technology (DST), Professor Abhay Karandikar, launched the call for pre-proposals for setting up Thematic Hubs (T-Hubs). The launch occurred on January 20, 2024, on the sidelines of the 9th edition of the India International Science Festival.
The call for pre-proposals invites academic institutions and research and development labs to submit innovative pre-proposals in consortia mode, aligning with the objectives of the National Quantum Mission. The thematic hubs will focus on Quantum Computing, Quantum Communication, Quantum Sensing & Metrology, and Quantum Materials & Devices.
Professor Abhay Karandikar emphasized the significance of this launch, stating, “The launch of the pre-proposal is an important step in the National Quantum Mission approved by the Cabinet last year.” He outlined that the National Quantum Mission aims to make substantial progress in the coming months, collaborating with researchers, industry, and startups to translate research into deployable technologies.
The Department of Science and Technology (DST) will provide the necessary resources to facilitate the success of the submissions. Secretary DST Professor Abhay Karandikar highlighted the spirit of collaboration within the mission, emphasizing its potential to make a meaningful impact at both the national and global levels.
The pre-proposals are expected to showcase quantum technologies that advance the application of quantum science and technology. Senior Adviser DST and Secretary SERB Dr. Akhilesh Gupta provided detailed information on the call’s highlights and other relevant details during the launch.
The call for pre-proposals follows the recent approval at the 1st meeting of the Mission Governing Board (MGB) of the National Quantum Mission. The MGB approved the decision to invite pre-proposals, aligning with the mission’s central objectives.
The National Quantum Mission, approved by the Union Cabinet on April 19, 2023, is implemented by DST with a total outlay of Rs. 6003.65 Crore for a period of eight years. The mission aims to seed, nurture, and scale up scientific and industrial research and development in Quantum Technology, fostering a vibrant and innovative ecosystem in the field. The goal is to accelerate quantum technology-led economic growth, making India a leading nation in the development of Quantum Technologies & Applications.
