In a dramatic turn of events, N Chandrababu Naidu, the President of the Telugu Desam Party (TDP) and former Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh, found himself in the eye of a political storm when he was arrested in the early hours of Saturday by the Nandyal Police. The arrest, linked to allegations of corruption, sent shockwaves through the political landscape of the state.
The Arrest Sequence:
A substantial police force, led by Nandyal Range DIG Raghurami Reddy and the Crime Investigation Department (CID), descended upon N Chandrababu Naidu camp at RK Function Hall in Nandyal at approximately 3 am to apprehend him. At the time of his arrest, Naidu was resting in his caravan.
The police’s efforts were met with determined resistance from a multitude of TDP cadres who had gathered in large numbers. Even the Special Protection Group (SPG) personnel responsible for Naidu’s security did not permit the police to approach him, citing regulations that prohibited anyone from reaching Naidu until 5.30 am.
It was not until around 6 am that the police managed to access Naidu’s vehicle, subsequently arresting him. The DIG informed Naidu that he was being apprehended in connection with the AP Skill Development Corporation scam, where he was named as Accused No. 1.
A notice, issued under Section 50 (1) (2) of the Criminal Procedure Code, outlined the charges against Naidu. The notice indicated that he was being arrested under various sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and the Prevention of Corruption Act, 1988. Importantly, it clarified that this was a non-bailable offence and that Naidu could only seek bail through the courts.
