Monsoon In Advance As Expected to Reach Mumbai by June 10 says IMD

Mumbai – As heatwaves continue to grip various parts of the country, the southwest monsoon has reached Maharashtra, offering some respite from the intense heat. According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the monsoon is expected to advance over Mumbai, remaining parts of Karnataka, coastal Andhra Pradesh, and southern Chhattisgarh within the next three to four days.

The IMD announced that the northern limit of the monsoon currently passes through Ratnagiri and Solapur in Maharashtra, Medak in Telangana, Bhadrachalam and Vizianagaram in Andhra Pradesh, and Islampur in West Bengal.

IMD Director General M. Mohapatra stated, “Once the monsoon’s northern limit reaches parts of central India next week, it will have covered half the country. Areas covered by the monsoon are unlikely to record heatwave conditions any further. The quantum of rainfall for June remains normal so far.”

The weather body indicated that conditions are favorable for the southwest monsoon to advance further into additional parts of central Arabian Sea, the remaining parts of Karnataka and coastal Andhra Pradesh, more parts of Maharashtra (including Mumbai), Telangana, and parts of southern Chhattisgarh and Odisha over the next few days.

Rain and thunderstorms are expected over northwest India till Friday, while heatwave conditions are likely to persist in isolated pockets of east India, Uttar Pradesh, and north Madhya Pradesh for the next five days.

Mahesh Palawat, Vice President of Climate and Meteorology at Skymet Weather, commented on the monsoon’s progression: “Monsoon progression has been near normal so far. However, rains have reduced over Peninsular India. In the next three to four days, monsoon will advance to Pune, Mumbai, etc. There is a monsoon surge over the western arm. We cannot say immediately if it will advance on time over northwest India, which is affected by high temperatures.”

The IMD also emphasized the need for health facilities to prepare for heat-related illnesses, following advisories to strengthen systems against heatwaves.
