Veteran actor Mithun Chakraborty has been bestowed with the prestigious Dadasaheb Phalke Award, India’s highest film honor, at a ceremony held in New Delhi’s Vigyan Bhawan on October 8, 2024. The award was presented by President Droupadi Murmu during the 70th National Film Awards, celebrating Mithun’s monumental contributions to Indian cinema over the decades.
The 74-year-old actor, known for his unforgettable performances in films like Agneepath, Mujhe Insaaf Chahiye, Hum Se Hai Zamana, and Kasam Paida Karne Wale Ki, expressed his gratitude on the red carpet before the ceremony. “What can I say? Such great honor—I can only thank God. The struggles I faced, God has returned everything to me. I’m still processing it,” he shared.
The announcement of Mithun Chakraborty as the Dadasaheb Phalke Award recipient was made last month by Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, who praised the actor’s remarkable cinematic journey and its impact on generations. Previous recipients of the award include cinematic legends like Amitabh Bachchan, Waheeda Rehman, Rekha, Asha Parekh, and Rajinikanth.
Mithun Chakraborty, born in Calcutta, began his film career with his debut in Mrigayaa (1976), a role that won him the National Film Award for Best Actor. Over the years, he earned two more National Film Awards for his stellar performances in Tahader Katha (1992) and Swami Vivekananda (1998). His enduring influence on Indian cinema has been reaffirmed with this latest accolade, capping an illustrious career spanning decades.
In addition to the Dadasaheb Phalke Award, Mithun was also named as a recipient of the Padma Bhushan, India’s third-highest civilian honor, earlier this year.
Most recently, Mithun was seen in The Kashmir Files, directed by Vivek Agnihotri. His son, Namashi Chakraborty, has also stepped into Bollywood, making his debut in the film Bad Boy.
