Washington, D.C. — The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) has captured an intriguing image of a mysterious hole on the surface of Mars. Discovered on August 15, 2022, this pit is located on the side of the now-extinct Arsia Mons volcano, reported Space.com. The image was taken by the High-Resolution Imaging Science Experiment (HiRISE) camera aboard NASA’s Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter (MRO), which was just 256 kilometers (159 miles) above the Martian surface at the time.
Vertical Shaft on Mars
The mysterious hole, believed to be a vertical shaft, has sparked significant interest within the scientific community. These pits, which appear to be connected to volcanic activity, could have major implications for future Mars exploration. Channels of lava can flow away from a volcano underground, and when the volcano becomes extinct, these channels empty, leaving behind long, underground tubes.
