Mamata Banerjee unopposed re-elected as the Trinamool Congress chief

Kolkata: West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Wednesday was re-elected as the Trinamool Congress chairperson, said a top party official. The organisational elections in Trinamool Congress were held after a gap of five years.

Trinamool Congress secretary Partha Chatterjee said that Mamata Banerjee was elected as the chief without any contest as no other leader contested. 48 proposers and seconders submitted nominations, supporting Mamata Banerjee. As no one else filed nomination for the post of the chairperson, Mamata Banerjee was elected unopposed, added the returning officer for the organisational polls, Partha Chatterjee.

The party was founded by Mamata Banerjee in 1998, after breaking away from the Congress and Mamata Banerjee has headed it from then on.

The party met two unsuccessful attempts in the Assembly polls- first in 2001 when it won 60 out of the 294 assembly seats, then again in 2006 when the score went dipped further and TMC was able to win just 30 seats. This, however changed in the  2011 assembly elections when Trinamool Congress won 184 of 294 seats, to claim power in West Bengal by defeating the then mighty Left Front.

In the 2016 West Bengal Legislative Assembly elections, the party’s stature grew even further when it won 211 seats and remained in power with an enhanced majority. In the 2021 elections, the party grew even stronger winning a total of 213 seats.
