Covid: India records the daily positivity rate of 10.99 per cent and weekly positivity at 12.98 per cent

New Delhi: India’s total tally of COVID-19 cases rose to 4,18,03,318. Reportedly, around 1,72,433 people tested positive for Coronavirus infections in a day.

As per the updated data available on the Union Health Ministry website on Thursday, the active covid cases have come down to 15,33,921. The total recorded deaths have climbed to 4,98,983 with 1008 deaths recorded in the last 24 hours. The mortality rate stands at 1.19 per cent, as per the Union Health Ministry website data.

The active 15,33,921 cases are 3.67 per cent of the total infections, which has seen a decline of 87,682 cases in the last 24 hours. The national recovery rate of Covid cases has come down to 95.14 per cent, the health ministry data reveals.

As per the current updates on the website, the daily positivity rate has been recorded at 10.99 per cent and the weekly positivity rate has been recorded at 12.98 per cent.

The number of people who have been discharged rose to 3,97,70,414 with fresh additions of 2,59,107 people being discharged in the last 24 hours. The current fatality rate due to Covid cases has been recorded at 1.19 per cent.

As per the reports published on Union Health Ministry’s official website, 1,67,87,93,137 doses of the covid vaccine have been administered so far, with 2,59,107 doses been given in the last 24 hours. Also, 15,69,449 Covid tests were done on the previous day.

Previously, India’s first covid case was reported on the 27th of January 2020, in Kerala. With the country witnessing multiple new cases over the period of just two months, a lockdown was imposed on the 25th of March 2020. From there on, India’s Covid case tally had crossed the 20 lakh mark on the 7th of August 2020; the 30 lakh mark on 23rd August 23 2020; the 40 lakh mark on 5th September 2020 and the 50 lakh mark on 15th September 2020. The covid cases kept rising up and crossed the one crore mark on 18th December 2020.

The country was beginning to slowly and steadily come out of the grim situation it witnessed in the past year, as the daily count of new covid cases had dropped significantly, when it was hit by the second wave in around April 2021. An even rapid rise in Covid cases was registered in the second wave throughout the country and India crossed, within a few months, the milestone of two crore covid cases on the 4th of May 2021 and three crore on 23rd June 22021.

Due to the covid cases, reportedly, 4,98,983 people have so far lost life in the country, with 1,42,784 deaths reported in Maharashtra, 56,100 deaths reported in Kerala, 39,137 deaths reported in Karnataka, 37,636 deaths reported in Tamil Nadu, 25,919 deaths in Delhi and 23,254 deaths reported in Uttar Pradesh.

The ministry has stressed that more than 70 per cent of the deaths in the covid cases have occurred due to comorbidities in the infected people.

The Union Health Ministry has informed on its official website that their figures are being reconciled with the Indian Council of Medical Research. It further said that the state-wise distribution of figures are subject to further verification and reconciliation.

With the vaccination drive in full throttle, the fresh infection cases have begun to come down significantly and the Central and state governments have started opening up the markets and various institutions that were closed as a precaution to the rising covid cases. Strict guidelines have been notified and precautions are being taken to contain any further transmission of the cases.

At the same time, India is going through a third wave which is due to the Omicron variant of the Coronavirus. Although the infection transmission rates are pretty high, the mortality rate has been in control. Meanwhile, a preliminary covid data analysis by IIT Madras had predicted the third wave to reach the peak between the 1st of February to the 15th of February.
