Deadly Shootings in Maine: Multiple Victims and Suspect Still at Large

At least 22 people have been killed in a series of shootings in Lewiston, Maine, with over 50-60 people reported injured. Authorities are still searching for the suspect, 40-year-old Robert Card, whom they consider “armed and dangerous.”
Tragedy struck Lewiston, Maine, as a series of shootings left at least 22 people dead and over 50-60 individuals injured. The shooter remains at large, leaving the community in shock and fear.
The Lewiston Police Department has identified 40-year-old Robert Card as a “person of interest” in connection with the shootings. Authorities have issued a warning that Card should be “considered armed and dangerous.”
The shootings occurred at various locations, including a bowling alley, a local bar, and a Walmart distribution center. While it is unclear how many people sustained injuries due to gunfire, the magnitude of the incident is staggering.
Two law enforcement officials, who requested anonymity, revealed that investigators are still processing the crime scenes and gathering evidence.
The Lewiston Police had initially reported at least “two active shooter events” in the city and shared images of a suspect wielding what appeared to be a semiautomatic rifle, sparking a massive response from law enforcement agencies and a lockdown of businesses.
In a statement on Facebook, the Androscoggin County Sheriff’s Office urged businesses to lock down and close while the investigation is ongoing. The suspect, Robert Card, is still at large, and authorities are working tirelessly to locate him.
The Maine State Police also issued a warning about an “active shooter” on its social media platform, urging residents to shelter in place and stay inside their homes with doors locked.
President Joe Biden has been briefed on the incident by US officials, highlighting the gravity of the situation. Lewiston Mayor Carl Sheline expressed his heartbreak for the city’s residents and encouraged them to follow recommended guidelines. He said, “Lewiston is known for our strength and grit, and we will need both in the days to come.”
This incident represents the deadliest mass shooting in the United States since at least May 2022 when a gunman opened fire at an elementary school in Uvalde, Texas, killing 19 children and two teachers, according to data from the Gun Violence Archive. The number of mass shootings in the US involving four or more people shot has increased significantly since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, with at least 647 such incidents reported in 2022, according to the archive’s data. The toll of gun violence in the United States continues to be a matter of deep concern for the nation.
