India’s Livestock Count Presented in Lok Sabha

The Department of Animal Husbandry and Dairy, the Department of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairy conducted the latest research, namely, the 20th Livestock Census in 2019 by participating with all Districts and Union Areas. Includes all pets and their numbers of 16 species such as Cattle, Buffalo, Trees, Yak, Sheep, Goat, Pig, Horse, Horse, Monkey, Donkey Camel, Dog, Rabbit and Elephant and poultry (Birds, Duck., Turks and other poultry) (home), local businesses / non-domestic businesses and institutions in their area. In addition, census of 20 animals is a truly unique effort as the first data collected using computerized computers to digitize home-level data by transmitting it online from the field.

How Important Are Animals on Earth

All animals play an important role in the ecosystem. Some of them help to release nutrients from the cycle while others help to decompose, the carbon cycle, and nitrogen. In other words, all kinds of animals, insects, and even microorganisms play a role in the ecosystem. Pets, such as livestock, provide us with food, fiber and skin. Wildlife, including birds, fish, insects and pollinators, are essential to support the web of activity in an active ecosystem.

How important Animals are in the Daily Human Lifestyle

Animals are a natural gift for us. They contribute much to human life. Animals such as oxen, donkeys etc are used for transport and provide daily necessities for human life. Animals such as hens, ducks that provide eggs are a good source of protein for humans and fish that provide nutritious food for humans function. Throughout our history, animals have been used to cultivate the land, to aid in transport, and to construct buildings.

The total number of livestock is 536.76 million represents an increase of 4.8% compared data Census-2012, livestock in rural and urban areas is 514.11 million and 22.65 million, number of (Cattle, Buffalo, Mithun and Yak) is 303.76 million in 2019,1.3% increase over the previous census, number of foreign / diverse and indigenous / non-indigenous cattle is 51.36 million and 142.11 million, number of Indigenous / Unspecified Cattle Increased by 10% by 2019, total number of Exotic / Crossbred cattle has increased by 29.3% in 2019, 6% decrease in the number of Indigenous cattle (both descriptive and non-defined) over the previous census. However, the decline in Indigenous cattle decline in 2012-2019 is very small compared to 2007-12 which was estimated at 9%.

The total number of buffalo in the country is 109.85 million which shows an increase of about 1.1% ,Cattle and dairy animals are 125.75 million, an increase of 6.0%,Sheep in the country is 74.26 million in 2019, an increase of 14.1% over the previous Census, Goats in the country in 2019 are 148.89 million which is an increase of 10.1% over the previous census, total number of pigs in the country is 9.06 million in the current Census, down 12.03% from the previous Census, total number of Mithun and Yak in the country is 3.9 lakh and 58 thousand in 2019, an increase of 29.5% and 24.9% respectively.

The total number of horses and ponies in the country is 3.4 lakhs in 2019, by 45.2% lower than the previous Census, population of Muzizi and donkeys in the country is 84 000 and 1.2 lakhs in 2019, down 57.1% and 61.2% respectively, total number of camels in the country is 2.5 lakhs in 2019, down 37.1% from the previous Census, number of  chickens in the country is 851.81 million in 2019, an increase of 16.8% over the previous Census, total number of Backyard chickens in the country is 317.07 million in 2019, up 45.8% higher than the previous Census, total commercial poultry in the country is 534.74 million in 2019, an increase of 4.5% over the previous Census.

 Considering the number and circumstances of the past two decades, no species are on the brink of extinction. However, only the number of camels and donkeys indicates a decline in the number of past four censuses, namely, 17th (2003), 18th (2007), 19th (2012) and 20th (2019) Livestock Census. , Animal Husbandry and Breeding, SHRI PARSHOTTAM RUPALA in a written reply to Lok Sabha.
