Australian Envoy Kevin Rudd Deletes Trump Criticisms After Election Citing Respect for Office

Australia’s ambassador to the U.S., Kevin Rudd, has removed past critical comments about former President Donald Trump following Trump’s recent election win. Rudd, a former Australian prime minister, had previously described Trump as “the most destructive president in history” during his tenure as the head of the Asia Society think tank.

Rudd issued a statement explaining the removal of these comments from his website and social media, emphasizing respect for the U.S. presidency and clarifying that his remarks do not reflect the views of the Australian government. He noted that this action was intended to avoid any potential misunderstandings regarding his current role.

Australia’s Foreign Minister, Penny Wong, affirmed that the Australian government, led by Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, maintains a strong alliance with the U.S., including bipartisan support for the AUKUS security deal. Wong assured that Rudd, who assumed his role as ambassador in 2023, is capable of working effectively with a Republican administration.
