IMD Issues Yellow Alert for Seven Kerala Districts Amidst Heavy Rainfall

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has raised concerns over the persisting heavy rainfall in Kerala by issuing a yellow alert for seven districts. According to the latest forecast, Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Alappuzha, Ernakulam, Kozhikode, Kannur, and Kasargod are expected to witness significant rainfall, ranging from 6 cm to 11 cm, on Saturday.

State Revenue Minister K. Rajan shared alarming statistics, revealing that Kerala has witnessed 11 rain-related deaths from May 9 to May 23. These fatalities include six drownings, two quarry accidents, two lightning strikes, and one house collapse, painting a grim picture of the ongoing weather challenges.

In response to the escalating situation, Minister Rajan urged residents to exercise caution and avoid venturing into water bodies and coastal areas, particularly emphasizing the need to safeguard children during the vacation period. He expressed hope that the rainfall intensity would decrease slightly after Saturday, offering a glimmer of relief to the rain-battered state.

Local authorities, in collaboration with the Fire Department, police, and Revenue Department, remain on high alert to tackle any emergencies arising from the adverse weather conditions. Additionally, two teams from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) have been deployed to assist in disaster management efforts across Kerala.

As part of relief measures, eight relief camps have been established across the state, providing shelter to 223 individuals affected by the heavy downpour. With safety as the top priority, residents are urged to stay informed through official channels and adhere to precautionary measures to mitigate risks associated with the ongoing heavy rainfall.
