US President Joe Biden has strongly condemned the recent anti-Semitic attacks against Israeli soccer fans in Amsterdam, calling the incident “despicable” and drawing comparisons to historical periods when Jews faced severe persecution. The assault, which took place following a match between Israel’s Maccabi Tel Aviv Football Club and Ajax, saw fans ambushed by groups on scooters, who reportedly chanted anti-Israel slogans and brandished Palestinian flags.
In a statement posted on X, Biden emphasized the need to “relentlessly fight Antisemitism, wherever it emerges,” and expressed gratitude to Dutch authorities for their commitment to holding the attackers accountable. His remarks follow close communication with both Israeli and Dutch officials.
Dutch authorities believe the attack may have been motivated by online calls for violence against Jewish people. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, during a visit to the Foreign Ministry, echoed Biden’s concerns and condemned the incident as a repeat of Europe’s dark history of anti-Semitism. Reflecting on the upcoming anniversary of Kristallnacht, a tragic event in 1938 that marked the beginning of intensified Nazi persecution of Jews, Netanyahu warned against the resurgence of such hate on European soil.
The assault left several Israeli fans injured, with reports of stolen passports and videos of the violence circulating on social media. In response, Israel is dispatching an aid mission to Amsterdam to support the affected individuals.
