Joe Biden Warns Netanyahu: US Policy on Israel Tied to Protection of Gaza Civilians

In a significant development amid the ongoing conflict in Gaza, President Joe Biden issued a stern warning to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, signaling a potential shift in US policy towards Israel. The warning came in the aftermath of an Israeli airstrike that killed seven aid workers in Gaza, including a US-Canadian citizen.

During their first call since the tragic incident, President Biden conveyed the imperative for Israel to take concrete steps to address civilian harm, humanitarian suffering, and the safety of aid workers in Gaza. He emphasized the need for an immediate ceasefire and urged Israel to implement specific measures to mitigate civilian casualties and alleviate the dire humanitarian situation in the region.

The White House underscored that US policy towards Gaza would be contingent upon Israel’s actions in response to these concerns. National Security Council spokesman John Kirby stressed the urgency of the situation, calling for prompt and tangible steps from Israel to alleviate the suffering of civilians and increase humanitarian aid to Gaza.

While reaffirming the ironclad US support for Israel’s security, Biden’s warning hinted at potential repercussions if Israel fails to heed calls for restraint and humanitarian assistance. The President faces mounting pressure, both domestically and internationally, to reassess US military aid to Israel in light of the escalating violence and civilian casualties in Gaza.

Democratic Senator Chris Coons, a close confidant of President Biden, advocated for conditioning US aid to Israel if it proceeds with a full-scale offensive in Gaza without adequate measures to protect civilians. Coons’ remarks reflect a growing sentiment within the Democratic Party to leverage US military assistance as a means to compel Israel to prioritize civilian safety and humanitarian relief efforts.

Additionally, First Lady Jill Biden reportedly expressed her concern over the mounting civilian casualties in Gaza, urging President Biden to take decisive action to address the humanitarian crisis. The growing chorus of voices calling for a reevaluation of US support for Israel underscores the political challenges facing the Biden administration amidst the escalating conflict.

Despite President Biden’s condemnation of the Israeli airstrike and expressions of outrage over the loss of civilian lives, the administration has yet to implement concrete measures to hold Israel accountable or curb military aid. However, Biden’s warning to Netanyahu signals a potential shift in US policy towards Israel, as the administration faces mounting pressure to address the humanitarian crisis in Gaza and uphold human rights principles.

As the conflict in Gaza continues to escalate, President Biden’s response will be closely scrutinized both domestically and internationally, with implications for US-Israel relations and broader Middle East diplomacy. The outcome of Biden’s diplomatic efforts could have significant implications for the prospects of peace and stability in the region.
