A huge fire has hit a central depot in southeastern Bangladesh, killing at least five people and injuring more than 100, officials said on Sunday. The blaze broke out on a container site on Saturday night in Sitakundu, 40 km (25 miles) from the port city of Chittagong, causing several boxes of explosions after a massive explosion in the area, officials said.

Firefighters were still working to put out the blaze on Sunday morning, said fire chief Faruk Hossain Shikder. The blast shook the neighborhood and shattered the glass of the windows of nearby houses, local residents said. The death toll could rise as more injured are in critical condition, said Chittagong surgeon Mohammed Elias Hossain. The injured included firefighters and police officers who were among the injured, he said.

He appealed to all doctors in the region to help deal with the situation and called for a blood transfusion. It was not immediately clear what caused the fire. Firefighters said they suspected it might have come from a hydrogen peroxide container and quickly spread to other containers. In 2020, three people died after an oil tanker exploded at a container depot in Chittagong, Patenga.
