Indian Naval Ship Sumitra Foils Piracy Attempts, Rescues 36 Crew Members off East Coast of Somalia

In a display of swift and decisive action, Indian Naval Ship Sumitra has successfully thwarted piracy attempts and rescued 36 crew members from two hijacked fishing vessels off the East Coast of Somalia.

The indigenous Offshore Patrol Vessel, INS Sumitra, deployed for Anti-Piracy and Maritime Security Operations, responded to distress calls regarding the hijacking of Iranian-flagged Fishing Vessel Iman and subsequently intercepted the vessel. Following standard operating procedures and employing coercive tactics, Sumitra safely rescued 17 Iranian nationals who were held hostage by pirates aboard FV Iman.

Continuing its mission, INS Sumitra swiftly located and intercepted another hijacked vessel, Fishing Vessel Al Naeemi, flagged Iranian, where 19 Pakistani nationals were being held captive by Somali pirates. Through effective deployment of its integral helicopter and boats, Sumitra compelled the safe release of the crew and the vessel, ensuring their well-being and security.

The timely and relentless efforts of INS Sumitra within less than 36 hours prevented the misuse of the hijacked fishing vessels as mother ships for further acts of piracy on merchant vessels in the Southern Arabian Sea. By rescuing a total of 36 crew members, comprising Iranian and Pakistani nationals, Sumitra has demonstrated the Indian Navy’s unwavering commitment to maritime security and safety in the region.

The successful anti-piracy operations underscore the Indian Navy’s dedication to combating all maritime threats and ensuring the safety of mariners and vessels at sea.
