In a curious twist of fate, Greenland, renowned for its role as a major source of meltwater flooding Earth’s shores, is defying expectations by rising faster than the encroaching oceans. As if mocking the laws of physics, the elevating bedrock of this icy expanse is gradually birthing new land, reshaping the geography of our planet.
Among the remarkable transformations is the emergence of Uunartoq Qeqertaq, aptly named ‘warming island,’ a new 13-kilometer-long landmass off Greenland’s east coast. Officially recognized and added to Greenland’s maps in 2005, this island symbolizes the dynamic changes unfolding in the region.
“The land uplift we observe in Greenland these years cannot be solely explained by the natural post-ice age development,” explains geodesist Shfaqat Abbas Khan from the Technical University of Denmark (DTU). “Greenland is rising significantly more.”
Recent data from 58 GPS stations across Greenland, collectively known as GNET, reveal a startling acceleration in the melting process, with the island’s bedrock rising up to 20 centimeters in the last decade alone. Glaciers around Greenland’s periphery, though accounting for just 4 percent of its ice cover, contribute disproportionately to land uplift, with the loss of mass from these outer glaciers surpassing even that of the main ice sheet.
The phenomenon, known as elastic rebound, sees the previously compressed earth rebounding into its more naturally expanded state, akin to a squashed pillow regaining its volume upon release. From the southeast Kangerlussuaq glacier’s retreat aiding in the largest uplift to the subtle shifts in landmass across the region, Greenland’s dynamic transformation is a testament to the profound impact of climate change on our planet’s physical landscape.
