Government Explores Green Hydrogen as Key to Round-the-Clock Renewable Energy

In a significant stride towards bolstering the adoption of renewable energy and advancing the National Green Hydrogen Mission, the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy is delving into the potential of green hydrogen to support round-the-clock electricity. Led by the Union Minister for Power and New and Renewable Energy, Shri R. K. Singh, a high-level meeting convened in New Delhi on February 6, 2024, marked a pivotal step in this endeavor.

Attended by officials from key stakeholders including the Ministry of Power, NTPC, Central Electricity Commission, and Solar Energy Corporation of India, the meeting focused on delineating modalities for integrating green hydrogen with solar and wind energy to ensure uninterrupted power supply.

Discussions at the meeting encompassed various avenues for leveraging green hydrogen as a storage medium to meet round-the-clock power demands and peak power requirements. Integral to the deliberations were considerations regarding policy mechanisms to incentivize and facilitate such initiatives. Notably, the Contract for Difference (CfD) methodology emerged as a potential framework, aimed at bridging the gap between market prices and predetermined “strike prices.”

Underlining the significance of the initiative, the Union Minister emphasized the imperative of addressing the escalating power demand and emphasized the role of round-the-clock renewable energy in mitigating costs and enhancing accessibility. Emphasizing the need for meticulous planning and strategic implementation, the Minister underscored that insights gleaned from initial projects would inform the execution of larger-scale endeavors in the future.

As the government spearheads efforts to usher in a sustainable energy landscape, the exploration of green hydrogen as a cornerstone of round-the-clock renewable energy underscores a transformative shift towards cleaner, more resilient power solutions. With policy frameworks taking shape and stakeholders rallying behind the vision, the stage is set for India to emerge as a global leader in renewable energy innovation and sustainability.
