In another significant operation by the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) against organized gold smuggling syndicates codenamed “Gold on the Highway”, 15.93 kg of foreign-origin gold was smuggled across the Indo-Myanmar border and valued at Rs 8.38 crore, was seized in Guwahati and Dimapur on May 12, 2022.Based on specific information, DRI officials conducted discreet surveillance of two oil tankers and a truck traveling separately from Mao, Manipur to Guwahati, Assam. In the early hours of May 12, 2022, these vehicles were intercepted simultaneously at various points along the national road between Dimapur and Guwahati.
833 kg of gold valued at Rs. 405 crore
In FY 2021-22, DRI has 833 kg of gold valued at Rs. 405 crore during its operations across the country. Of that, DRI has more than 208 kg of gold worth Rs. 102.6 crore in the northeastern states, smuggled through the highly sensitive Indo-Myanmar-Indo-Bangladesh border.After intensive investigation of the intercepted vehicles, 96 pieces of gold biscuits weighing 15.93 kg carefully hidden in different parts of the three vehicles were recovered. The operation arrested five members of the syndicate and seized three vehicles. Further investigations are in progress.DRI’s ability to effectively detect and influence such seizures acts as a deterrent to those seeking to compromise India’s economic frontiers. DRI remains committed to continuing its relentless crackdown on perpetrators of such crimes.
