Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has urgently called for the establishment of a humanitarian corridor into Gaza in response to the increasingly dire situation facing the enclave’s 2.3 million residents. His plea comes as diplomatic efforts to deliver aid to Gaza have faced significant challenges. Following a recent attack by Hamas that claimed more than 1,300 lives, Israel has imposed a total blockade on Gaza and launched unprecedented airstrikes.
Trudeau emphasized the need for unimpeded humanitarian access and the creation of a humanitarian corridor to ensure the delivery of essential aid, including food, fuel, and water to the civilians in Gaza. He stressed the urgency of this action, stating, “It is imperative that this happen.”
While reaffirming Canada’s support for Israel’s right to self-defense in accordance with international law, Trudeau reminded the House of Commons that even during times of conflict, there are rules that must be observed. He said, “Even in times of war, there are rules that must be followed.” He strongly condemned terrorism and emphasized that nothing could justify Hamas’ acts of terror. Trudeau also made it clear that Hamas did not represent the Palestinian people or their legitimate aspirations.
Earlier in the day, the Canadian government issued a warning to its citizens in Lebanon, advising them to consider leaving due to heightened security risks in the region. Canada has been actively involved in assisting its citizens in Israel, using two military planes to evacuate those in need. The first group of Canadians has safely crossed from the West Bank into Jordan, and approximately 300 individuals in Gaza are currently awaiting evacuation through the Rafah border crossing into Egypt.
Tragically, five Canadians lost their lives in the Hamas attack on Israel, while three others are still reported as missing, underlining the severity of the situation and the necessity of swift action in addressing the crisis.
