The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) is taking its maiden space flight mission, Gaganyaan, to new heights by collaborating with the country’s top fashion institute to design ground uniforms for the selected astronauts. Recently revealed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the four astronauts chosen for the ambitious program donned blue ground uniforms meticulously crafted by the National Institute of Fashion Technology (NIFT), Bengaluru.
Led by Prof Jonalee Bajpai, the NIFT team designed the uniform with an asymmetric style, symbolizing dynamism and energy. The chosen blue color represents the sky and peace, with Indian cotton-based fabric adding a touch of national pride. The ground uniform, distinct from the astronaut suits sourced from Russia, exudes calmness and perseverance, blending dark and light blue hues with horizontal stripes for visual balance.
The astronaut patch, featuring wings, the Ashok Chakra, and the ISRO logo, symbolizes positivity, abundance, and the confluence of various elements. Asymmetry, explained by Dr. Mohan V K, adds a youthful and dynamic flair to the design, aligning with the mission’s aim to excite 140 crore Indians and announce India’s entry into the elite space club.
Prashanth Nair, Angad Prathap, Ajit Krishnan, and Shubhanshu Shukla—selected from the Indian Air Force—are the chosen test pilots for the Gaganyaan mission. With the mission set to launch a crew into Low Earth Orbit for up to a week, the ground uniforms serve as a symbol of India’s bold leap into space exploration.
