In a significant development, Chinese President Xi Jinping is expected to skip the upcoming G20 Summit in India, while Premier Li Qiang is likely to represent China at the event. This decision by President Xi is seen as a departure from the tradition of Chinese leaders attending such global summits. However, sources suggest that Xi’s absence should not be interpreted as a reflection on the host country, as many leaders have skipped G20 Summits in the past for various reasons.
The G20 Summit, scheduled for September 9 and 10 in Delhi, will bring together leaders and delegates from 40 countries, including the 20 member states. While President Xi is not attending, it is also worth noting that Russian President Vladimir Putin has conveyed his decision to Prime Minister Narendra Modi to not attend the summit in person due to the ongoing “special military operation” in Ukraine.
Chinese Premier Li Qiang is expected to travel to India after attending the East Asia summit in Jakarta. It’s worth mentioning that President Xi did not travel to Italy for the G20 Summit in 2021 due to China’s COVID-19 restrictions.
While there has been no official confirmation from either China or India regarding the representation at the G20 Summit, sources emphasize that variations in the level of attendance at global summits are common due to leaders’ busy schedules and commitments.
The G20 comprises Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Canada, China, France, Germany, India, Indonesia, Italy, Japan, the Republic of Korea, Mexico, Russia, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, Turkey, the UK, the US, and the European Union (EU).
