Trailblazing All-Female Spacewalk: NASA Astronauts Jasmin Moghbeli and Loral O’Hara Shine Outside ISS

In a historic moment, two NASA astronauts, Jasmin Moghbeli and Loral O’Hara, embarked on a groundbreaking all-female spacewalk outside the International Space Station (ISS) on Wednesday morning (November 1). It marked the first-ever spacewalk for both astronauts, and their mission was to perform essential maintenance tasks.

Removing Radio Communications Gear and Solar Array Hardware

During the spacewalk, NASA’s dynamic duo was tasked with the removal of radio communications equipment and the swapping of hardware that enables the ISS’s solar arrays to efficiently track the sun, a crucial operation for the station’s power supply.

Following their historic spacewalk, both astronauts underwent comprehensive post-spacewalk medical examinations. This involved measuring each other’s vital signs, including temperature, blood pressure, and pulse. The meticulous process ensured their well-being and health, an integral part of their mission.

The astronauts were also actively engaged in further tasks related to their successful spacewalk. They reviewed and downlinked imagery taken using spacewalk cameras, shedding light on their extravehicular activities. Additionally, detailed inspections of their spacesuit gloves were carried out, with the findings sent to mission controllers on Earth for analysis.

Moreover, the crew members diligently logged into computers to engage in cognitive assessments, contributing to essential data collection. Their dedication to these tasks is indicative of the rigorous commitment required in their space missions.

Expedition 70: Delving into Microgravity Phenomena

Both astronauts arrived at the ISS earlier this year and are crew members of Expedition 70, which commenced on September 27, 2023. The mission of Expedition 70 encompasses a diverse range of scientific endeavors, all aimed at enhancing human life both on and off Earth.

Research conducted during this expedition will encompass the exploration of microgravity-related phenomena, heart health studies, cancer treatment advances, innovations in space manufacturing techniques, and much more. The astronauts’ dedicated work in the realm of space science holds the potential to drive groundbreaking discoveries that will benefit life on Earth and in the cosmos.

The all-female spacewalk, a groundbreaking milestone in the history of space exploration, serves as an emblem of progress and gender equality within the realm of space science. It signifies the remarkable contributions of women in the field and their pivotal role in advancing our understanding of the universe.
