Elon Musk revealed Tesla’s highly anticipated Cybercab robotaxi prototype during an event in Burbank, California, on Thursday night. The futuristic two-door sedan is expected to start production by 2026, with an estimated price tag of under $30,000.
Musk made a dramatic entrance, arriving at the event in one of the Cybercab vehicles, and later showcased another innovative concept the Robovan, a vehicle designed to transport up to 20 passengers at a time. The unveiling, which took place at a Warner Bros. Discovery movie studio, was delayed by nearly an hour, with Musk explaining that the event was held up due to a medical emergency in the audience.
While the Cybercab was the star of the show, specifics regarding the vehicle’s autonomous capabilities were noticeably absent. Musk did not provide technical details about how Tesla plans to advance its Full Self-Driving (FSD) technology to fully autonomous operation, a long-sought goal for the automaker. However, he did hint that Tesla’s FSD system could be available to Model 3 and Model Y owners in Texas and California by next year.
Musk, known for his optimistic timelines, tempered expectations by acknowledging that the robotaxi may not hit the market until 2027. “I tend to be a little optimistic on timeframes,” Musk told the crowd, “but before 2027, let me put it that way.”
The event was delayed two months after Musk ordered changes to the prototype, a common occurrence for Tesla, which has a history of pushing back product deadlines. Despite the delays, the presentation captured the imagination of attendees. “The concepts were all grand,” said Nancy Tengler, CEO of Laffer Tengler Investments and a Tesla investor. “Is the idea super cool? Absolutely.”
The unveiling continues Tesla’s mission to transform the automotive industry with its bold designs and autonomous driving technology, even as it navigates the challenges of bringing these ambitious projects to fruition.
