White House Accuses Elon Musk of Spreading Antisemitic Lie on X, Calls It “Unacceptable”

The White House, on Friday, condemned Elon Musk for perpetuating a “hideous” antisemitic lie on his social media platform, X. In response to a Musk post, White House spokesman Andrew Bates expressed strong disapproval, stating, “It is unacceptable to repeat the hideous lie behind the most fatal act of Antisemitism in American history at any time, let alone one month after the deadliest day for the Jewish people since the Holocaust.”
The controversy over unchecked antisemitic content on X, some of it endorsed by Musk, escalated further as major advertisers, including Apple Inc., began pulling ads from the platform. Musk, who regularly engages with antisemitic users on X, recently agreed with a post making derogatory remarks about Jewish people.
The White House spokesperson emphasized that Americans have “an obligation to speak out against anyone who attacks the dignity of their fellow Americans and compromises the safety of our communities.” Calls for action against Musk have also emerged, with Tesla Inc. shareholders and some voices suggesting the CEO should be suspended from his post.
The situation intensified after a report from Media Matters revealed advertisements from prominent companies running on X next to pro-Nazi content. Advertisers, including IBM, Apple, the European Commission, and Lions Gate Entertainment Corp., expressed their intent to suspend ads on X.
The strained relationship between Musk and Apple further escalated, with Apple announcing a pause in showing ads on X. The latest remarks from Musk, amidst rising antisemitism globally, have drawn attention to the platform’s handling of hate speech and discrimination. The Anti-Defamation League reported a significant increase in antisemitism on X following the Israel-Hamas conflict.
Elon Musk has faced criticism in the past for controversial statements, prompting calls for apologies and accusations against the ADL for impacting X’s advertising revenue. The ongoing situation raises questions about the responsibility of social media platforms in combating hate speech and ensuring the safety of users.
