The Defense Research and Development Organization (DRDO) achieved a significant milestone on the night of April 3, 2024, with the successful test-firing of the Agni-Prime nuclear ballistic missile off the coast of Odisha. This night test showcased the formidable power of the Agni-Prime missile, marking a significant advancement in India’s missile capabilities.
Designed to replace the Agni-1 missile, Agni-Prime is a next-generation ballistic missile crafted from lightweight materials for enhanced efficiency and agility. It underwent rigorous testing at Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam Island, meeting all performance standards with precision.
Agni-Prime stands as a deadly and modern addition to the Agni series of missiles, boasting medium-range capabilities and delivering unparalleled accuracy. Operating under India’s Strategic Forces Command, this missile is equipped with advanced features, including the option for one or multiple Independently Targetable Reentry Vehicle (MIRV) warheads, enabling simultaneous strikes on multiple targets.
With a length of 34.5 feet and a weight of 11,000 kg, Agni-Prime is propelled by a two-stage rocket motor powered by solid fuel. Its versatility extends to the installation of high-intensity explosive, thermobaric, or nuclear warheads weighing between 1500 to 3000 kg, ensuring formidable offensive capabilities.
The inclusion of a Maneuverable Reentry Vehicle (MaRV) in the third stage enhances Agni-Prime’s precision, allowing for accurate targeting of enemy installations. It is launched from the BEML-Tatra Transporter Erector Launcher, showcasing India’s commitment to strategic deterrence and defense.
Notably, Agni-Prime surpasses its predecessors in terms of weight and stage configuration, featuring two stages compared to the single-stage Agni-I missile. Its lighter weight and advanced design underscore its superiority, making it a potent asset for India’s defense arsenal.
The successful test of Agni-Prime signifies India’s steadfast commitment to bolstering its defense capabilities and maintaining regional security. As the missile prepares to join the ranks of India’s defense forces, it heralds a new era of deterrence and strategic readiness against emerging threats.
