In a classic political showdown, Joe Biden and Donald Trump have both expressed their readiness to engage in a presidential debate. Biden, speaking to radio host Howard Stern, stated his willingness to debate Trump, albeit without specifying the details. Meanwhile, Trump swiftly responded, asserting his readiness to debate Biden “ANYWHERE, ANYTIME, ANYPLACE.”
Trump proposed holding the debate at his campaign rallies in Michigan or even as early as Friday evening, suggesting a courtroom setting given his ongoing legal battles, which he perceives as political interference instigated by Biden.
However, Biden has previously indicated that any agreement to debate Trump would depend on his behavior, hinting at concerns about Trump’s conduct during such an event.
The Commission on Presidential Debates (CPD) has already scheduled three debates at various US universities in September and October. Nonetheless, Trump has criticized the CPD, accusing it of bias, particularly regarding its decision to move a 2020 debate to a virtual format due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
Both candidates could use the debate as an opportunity to showcase their stamina and refute lingering perceptions about their abilities. Biden, facing Trump’s “Sleepy Joe” nickname, and Trump, recently the subject of online teasing for appearing to doze off during his New York criminal trial, may seek to project vigor and alertness on the debate stage.
