Light Rainfall Brings Respite from Toxic Air in Delhi-NCR, Artificial Rain Plan in Progress

Delhi received these showers as the city government plans to induce artificial rain on November 20-21 through cloud seeding, a proactive measure to tackle the ongoing severe air pollution. The ambitious artificial rain project is designed to supplement the natural relief brought by rain, offering a dual strategy to combat the persistently hazardous air quality.
The Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) reported an improvement in air quality following the light rainfall. While the average Air Quality Index (AQI) at Anand Vihar remained severe at 462, there was a marked improvement to the moderate category on Friday morning. Similarly, RK Puram saw a significant improvement in the morning, transitioning from severe to satisfactory. Noida and Gurugram also witnessed a positive impact on air quality, albeit still in the very poor category.
Delhi’s 24-hour average AQI, recorded at 4 pm, stood at 437 on Thursday, reflecting a worsening situation from the previous day. The entire NCR, including Ghaziabad, Gurugram, Noida, Greater Noida, and Faridabad, reported very poor air quality, emphasizing the urgency for effective measures.
Artificial Rain: A Strategic Measure
The Delhi government’s decision to induce artificial rain showcases a commitment to innovative solutions in combating air pollution. The artificial rain project, scheduled for November 20-21, involves cloud seeding, a technique where chemicals are dispersed into the air to encourage cloud formation and precipitation. The move aligns with Stage IV of the Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP) implemented in the national capital.
The decision to artificially induce rain comes after the Supreme Court questioned the effectiveness of the odd-even car-rationing scheme, terming it “all optics.” The city has witnessed the rescheduling of the December winter break for schools, and entry restrictions on app-based taxis into Delhi have been imposed, adhering to the Supreme Court’s directives.
The artificial rain initiative addresses the urgent need for immediate action, and if successful, could significantly contribute to alleviating air pollution. The Chief Secretary has been directed to inform the Supreme Court that the Delhi government is willing to bear the entire cost of the artificial rain project, estimated at ₹13 Crore for Phase 1 and Phase 2 pilots.
As Delhi embraces the dual strategy of natural showers and the promise of artificial rainfall, there is optimism for a positive impact on air quality. The city’s proactive measures, coupled with nature’s contribution, signify a comprehensive approach to tackle the persistent challenge of air pollution.
Protecting the health and well-being of citizens remains a priority, and the artificial rain project underscores the willingness to explore innovative solutions. The success of this initiative could pave the way for future endeavors in environmental conservation, offering a glimmer of hope for cleaner, breathable air in the national capital.
