Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. has tested positive for COVID-19, as confirmed by the Presidential Communications Office on Tuesday. Despite the diagnosis, the 66-year-old president remains in good health and will isolate for a mandated five-day period. Notably, Marcos continues to fulfill his presidential duties by participating in scheduled meetings through teleconferencing.
The President was last seen in public on Saturday during a family day event held within the presidential palace grounds. Although he had planned events on Tuesday, including a visit to Mindanao in response to a bombing and earthquake-related displacements, these have been canceled due to his COVID-19 diagnosis.
This is not the first time President Marcos has contracted the virus. In 2020, he previously tested positive, according to his spokesperson at that time. Additionally, he received his second booster dose during a vaccination campaign organized by the health department last year.
The Philippines has reported 1,340 new cases of COVID-19 over the past week, according to Health Department data. The country has a total of over 4.1 million confirmed cases, with a majority having successfully recovered from the virus. The situation is being closely monitored as the President undergoes isolation and continues to discharge his responsibilities remotely.
