Global Health Organization CHD Group Leads Delegation at COP28 to Address Climate-Health Nexus

Mangaluru-based global health organization, CHD Group, is set to lead a 7-member international delegation at the Conference of the Parties (COP 28) meeting of the United Nations’ Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) in the United Arab Emirates. Running from November 30 to December 12, COP28 marks the first instance in UNFCCC history where health is a central agenda for discussion.

The CHD Group delegation comprises experts from South Asia, Africa, and Iran, who will actively engage in high-level meetings at the blue zone, addressing topics such as the public health consequences of climate change, just energy transition, reduction of fossil fuel usage, and concerns related to food security.

In collaboration with Climate Action Network – South Asia, CHD Group will host a side event within the blue zone, focusing on just energy transition in South Asia.

Dr. Edmond Fernandes, the founder and CEO of CHD Group, is scheduled to address the United Nations’ Foundation Pavilion, emphasizing the importance of lowering emissions and promoting equitable food distribution. Additionally, he will speak at the Ukraine Country Pavilion on the climate sensitivity of food systems and public nutrition, highlighting the impact of war on food security and health systems. Dr. Fernandes is expected to engage with key world leaders on the sidelines of the event.

Dr. Fernandes has consistently advocated for mainstreaming public health in all policies for a climate-secure future. As part of the Global Alliance on the Future of Food, he contributes to discussions on the intersection of climate change, health, and food systems at COP28. The delegation’s participation underscores the critical link between climate change and public health, emphasizing the need for a comprehensive and collaborative approach to address these interconnected challenges.
