The ‘Hit and Run’ case victims will now receive a raised compensation, the transport ministry said. Through a notification on Sunday, the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways informed a new scheme for the compensation of the victims of hit and run accidents.
The release said that the compensation for the seriously injured victims in the ‘hit and Run’ case has been raised from Rs 12,500 to Rs 50,000. Also, the compensation in case of deaths has been elevated from Rs 25,000 to Rs 2,00,000.
The process of application for the compensation and the release of the payment to the victims have also been made time-bound, the notification reads. This new scheme will come into effect from the 1st of April 2022 and will replace the Solatium Scheme, 1989.
The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways had also published rules on the 25th of February 2022 regarding the creation, operation, sources of funds, and so on, of the Motor Vehicles Accident Fund.
The release further said that the fund shall be used to provide compensation in case of Hit and Run Accidents, treatment for accident victims and any other purpose, as may be specified by the Central Government.
