India Develops State-of-the-Art Earth System Model for Climate Change Assessment

In a significant stride towards climate research and assessment, India has successfully developed its first indigenous Earth System Model (ESM) known as the IITM-ESM. This cutting-edge model was developed at the Centre for Climate Change Research (CCCR), Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology (IITM), under the Ministry of Earth Sciences.

The IITM-ESM marks a milestone in India’s climate science capabilities and has played a crucial role in the latest Sixth Assessment Report prepared by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC). It provides valuable insights into climate change dynamics, enabling policymakers and researchers to make informed decisions.

Supported by an allocation of Rs. 192.28 crores under the Monsoon Convection, Clouds and Climate Change (MC4) sub-scheme during the period 2017-2023, the development of the IITM-ESM underscores the government’s commitment to advancing climate forecasting systems.

The culmination of years of research and development efforts, the IITM-ESM is poised to revolutionize climate change assessment in India and contribute to global efforts in understanding and mitigating the impacts of climate change. The release of the National Climate Change Assessment report, which documents regional climate change projections, further strengthens India’s position in climate research and underscores its dedication to fostering sustainable environmental practices.

The availability of this report, accessible at link.springer.com/book/10.1007/978-981-15-4327-2, will benefit students, researchers, and policymakers alike, providing them with valuable insights into the future trajectory of climate change and its potential implications.

Union Minister of Earth Sciences, Shri Kiren Rijiju, emphasized the importance of these developments in a written reply in the Rajya Sabha today, highlighting India’s commitment to leveraging scientific advancements for addressing pressing environmental challenges and building a sustainable future.
