India Climbs to 7th Place in Climate Change Performance Index

New Delhi, 9,November,2023: In a positive development at the global climate talks COP28, India secured the 7th position in this year’s Climate Change Performance Index (CCPI), moving up one spot from the previous year. The CCPI evaluates the climate mitigation efforts of 63 countries and the European Union, covering over 90% of global greenhouse gas emissions.

India’s notable performance comes amid growing concerns about climate change and the need for robust strategies to mitigate its impacts. The country’s high ranking in greenhouse gas emissions and energy use categories reflects its efforts in addressing crucial aspects of climate change.

Despite being the world’s most populous country, India maintains relatively low per capita greenhouse gas emissions, signaling progress toward meeting the benchmark of well below 2 degrees Celsius. The CCPI report emphasizes that India is on track in this per capita GHG category.

However, challenges persist, particularly in the areas of climate policy and renewable energy. The report notes that while India is making strides in renewable energy, the transition is advancing too slowly. The country’s growing energy needs are still heavily reliant on coal, contributing to greenhouse gas emissions and severe air pollution, especially in urban areas.

Experts have pointed out the need for a faster phase-out of coal, reduced reliance on gas, and an accelerated adoption of renewable energy to align with global climate goals. The report also critiques Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s announcement at COP26, stating that India’s net-zero emissions target by 2070 lacks ambition and political will. Experts call for a more bottom-up approach, aiming for net-zero emissions by 2050.

The CCPI report acknowledges India’s efforts to meet its Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) with clear long-term policies focusing on renewable energy promotion and financial support for domestic manufacturing of renewable energy components. However, there is a call for more effective policy implementation and a shift toward transformative adaptation and disaster risk management.

The recognition of India’s achievements in the CCPI highlights the nation’s commitment to addressing climate change. As the world grapples with environmental challenges, India’s efforts and challenges underscore the ongoing global conversation on sustainable practices, renewable energy adoption, and climate policy improvements. The CCPI ranking serves as a reminder of the collective responsibility to build a more resilient and sustainable future.
