Recent research suggests that domestic cats may be one of the most common language recognition skills commonly seen in dogs. In a 2019 article in the journal Science Reports, a team of Japanese researchers reported showing that cats could see their names in a series of spoken words. Now, new research from other similar scientists suggests that this tendency may even extend to cat friends. A researchers asked 48 domestic cats the names of the females they lived with. Twenty-nine cats were residents of Japanese cat restaurants – coffee shops where customers could freely communicate with cats while, possibly, catching hair from their thighs – while another 19 came from private cages that housed three or more cats each. .

For each cat participant, the researchers played a recorded cat owner’s voice calling the name of another cat that lived together several times in a row. After the fourth call, the researchers showed the participating cat a portable image monitor; in the next two of the four tests, the image showed the cat’s face the owner called (this was called a “cohesive state”), while in the remaining experiments the image showed a coarse cat face different from the one the owner had named (“non-cohesive state”).
Researchers found that house cats, but not store cats, often stared at the monitor for long periods of time when the unmistakable image was on screen – indicating that cats broke their expectations and were trying to cope with the fact that their pet friends’ names and faces were not listed.”We have shown that cats expect a certain face when they hear a friend’s name,” the researchers wrote in their paper. “This study provides evidence that cats associate a friend’s name with a matching face without explicit training.”
Domestic cats
Interestingly, the researchers wrote that the café cats did not pay much attention to caution during inconsistencies, and paid less attention to complete testing than indoor cats. This suggests that cats’ cats are probably less familiar with each of their feline mates than domestic cats, and may hear the names of each cat called less, the authors wrote.On the other hand, domestic cats often hear their friends’ names often called – especially during a meal, when the naming of cats determines which animal gets food and which one does not, says researchers. This may give domestic cats more opportunities and a great incentive to link a cat’s name to its mate.
Of course, any research on the behavior of a domestic cat should be taken with a catnip character, given the challenges of capturing cat focus. Although domestic cats in the study focused on long-term imagery, on average, compared to congruous, the time difference reached a few frames (just one or two seconds) significantly.This is when cats decide to pay close attention. Many tests have had to be excluded from the team analysis because the cat completely refused to look at the guard, the team agreed. One cat had to be excluded from the study after deciding that the whole scientific thing was not his.
