Enhancing Safety: Mumbai-Ahmedabad Bullet Train Corridor to Deploy Seismometers

The National High Speed Rail Corporation (NHSRCL) has announced plans to bolster safety measures along the Mumbai-Ahmedabad ‘bullet train‘ corridor by installing twenty-eight seismometers. In a bid to fortify passenger safety and safeguard critical infrastructure, the initiative will incorporate an ‘Early Earthquake Detection System’ inspired by Japanese Shinkansen technology.

According to NHSRCL’s release, twenty-two seismometers will be strategically positioned along the corridor’s alignment. Notably, eight seismometers will be deployed across key locations in Maharashtra, including Mumbai, Thane, Virar, and Boisar, while Gujarat will host the remaining fourteen in Vapi, Bilimora, Surat, Bharuch, Vadodara, Anand, Mahembadad, and Ahmedabad.

In addition to these, six inland seismometers will be installed in earthquake-prone regions such as Khed, Ratnagiri, Latur, and Pangri in Maharashtra, along with Adesar and Old Bhuj in Gujarat. These instruments will play a crucial role in detecting seismic activity, facilitating swift response measures in the event of an earthquake.

Seismometers will be strategically placed in traction sub-stations and switching posts along the corridor, enabling real-time detection of earthquake-induced tremors. Upon detection, an automatic power shutdown mechanism will be activated, triggering emergency brakes to halt trains operating in the affected areas.

The selection of installation sites followed a meticulous survey conducted by Japanese experts, focusing on regions where earthquakes of magnitude greater than 5.5 have occurred in the past century. Moreover, a comprehensive soil suitability study, including micro tremor tests, was conducted to ensure the efficacy of the chosen sites.

By integrating advanced seismic monitoring technologies, the Mumbai-Ahmedabad bullet train corridor aims to enhance passenger safety and mitigate potential risks associated with seismic events. This proactive approach underscores NHSRCL’s commitment to fostering a secure and resilient high-speed rail infrastructure.
