Economy Focus: The Ministry of Earth Sciences is finalizing the National Blue Economy Policy for the country

A draft policy framework for India’s Blue Economy has been prepared. The draft blue economy policy framework envisages the optimal use of all sectors of the marine area (living, non-living resources, tourism, ocean energy, etc.) for the sustainable development of coastal areas. This policy paper contains key recommendations on a national accounting framework for the blue economy and ocean governance, coastal marine spatial planning and the prioritization of tourism, marine fisheries, aquaculture and fish processing. Manufacturing, Emerging Industries, Trade, Technology, Services and Skills Development, Logistics, Infrastructure and Shipping, Offshore and Deep Mining and Offshore Energy and Security, Strategic Dimensions and International Engagement.

The proposed National Blue Economy Advisory Council (BEAC) will have Secretaries of the respective Ministries/Departments. as members. It also includes Chief Secretaries/Chief Secretaries of Coastal States and industry representatives.The draft policy document was submitted for comments and feedback from the general public and all relevant stakeholders. Many valuable comments/suggestions received from Ministries/Departments, Members of Parliament, Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs), industry representatives and general public have been considered and the policy paper has been revised accordingly.

There is no “SwachhPrithvi, SwachhSagar” themed activity but “SwachhSagar, SurakshitSagar” themed activity is being implemented. This is a 75-day Coastal Cleanup campaign to clean at least 75 beaches along the coastal areas, which began on July 5, 2022, and will culminate on September 17, 2022, “International Coastal Cleanup Day.” The activity is organized by MoE along with Indian Coast Guard, MEF&CC, MoYAS, NDMA, Paryavaran Sanrakshan Gatividhi and Government Departments, Voluntary Organizations, Public and Students. Steps/initiatives would include promoting awareness campaigns, competitions and workshops/seminars on these issues through Earth Day, Ocean Day etc. in schools, colleges and universities. This information was given by the Secretary of State (I/C) for M/O Earth Sciences and M/o Science and Technology, Dr. Jitendra Singh.
