Karnataka High Court Stays Investigation of BJP Chief JP Nadda for Alleged Violation of Model Code of Conduct in Election Speech

The Karnataka High Court has stayed the investigation of BJP national president JP Nadda for allegedly violating the model code of conduct in election speech during the recent Karnataka assembly polls.

A criminal petition filed by Nadda, seeking to quash the case registered against him by the Harappanahalli police, was heard by a judge, Justice M. Nagaprasanna, who on Friday issued an interim order to stay the investigation and adjourned the hearing of the petition to July 21. On 7 May 2023, during the assembly election campaign, Nadda organized a BJP election rally at IB Circle in Harappanahalli town of Vijayanagara district.

On that occasion, Nadda reportedly said that if the BJP loses the elections, voters will be deprived of the schemes brought by the central government.

He also apparently stated that if the Congress comes to power in the state, many projects of the Center including Kisana Samman Nidhi will be closed.

Officials of the Election Control Division lodged a complaint with the Harappanahalli police station, saying the speech violated the model code of conduct.

The police registered the case and started an investigation. Nadda filed an application in the High Court to quash this investigation.
