The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Tuesday targeted Rahul Gandhi for his alleged mysterious foreign trips after reports suggested that the former Congress chief would return to India late in the evening after his recent visit to the United States. Rahul Gandhi left for the US late last month for a six-day visit during which he met the Indian diaspora, venture capitalists, technology executives and students.
Congress leader Rahul Gandhi addresses the Indian diaspora at an event in New York. Gandhi is scheduled to return to India late in the evening, reported citing Congress party sources, nearly 21 days after he arrived in the US.
“Why does Rahul Gandhi spend so much time abroad, especially when much of his travels are shrouded in secrecy?” BJP IT cell head Amit Malviya said in a tweet.
He added, “Several reports of his secret meetings with foreign agencies and groups hostile to Indian interests raise further questions about the purpose of these visits…”
Rahul Gandhi is returning to India ahead of a key opposition meeting in Patna on June 23, which will be attended by leaders of various non-BJP political parties. Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge and Gandhi are set to attend a meeting called by Chief Minister Nitish Kumar as part of his efforts to form a united opposition ahead of the crucial 2024 Lok Sabha elections.
Almost all the key opposition leaders are likely to attend the meeting except Odisha Chief Minister Biju Patnaik and his Telangana counterpart K Chandrashekhar Rao. A senior Bharat Rashtra Samithi leader of KCR, the party will continue to keep an equal distance from both the BJP and the Congress, an attitude likely prompted by the upcoming assembly elections in the state, where the two national rivals will be pitted against the regional party.
Opposition leaders expected to attend the meeting include West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) supremo Arvind Kejriwal, Left leaders, Tamil Nadu CM M K Stalin, Jharkhand CM Hemant Soren, Samajwadi Party President Akhilesh Yadav, NCP chief Other key figures include Sharad Pawar and Shiv Sena Group (UBT) president Uddhav Thackeray.
